Two seeds fell side by side in the same patch of soil, and only one small rain came before the long dry spell everyone in the garden had been dreading. The first seed used all the rain at once, reaching up fast, eager to be first, and grew tall within a week — taller than anything else in the bed. The second seed used the rain slowly, sending roots down deep before it ever bothered growing up, and stayed small and unimpressive for a long, quiet while. When the dry spell finally came, the first seed's tall stem wilted within days, its shallow roots unable to find water anywhere close to the surface. The second seed, roots already deep, kept growing steadily through the whole drought, slow and unhurried, exactly as it always had. The gardener never mentioned which one grew faster. She only ever mentioned, every year after, which one was still there in autumn.
