Teodor walked into the wrong hotel ballroom, confidently, in a rented suit, and sat through forty-five minutes of a stranger's wedding before the bridesmaid beside him leaned over and asked, gently, who exactly he was there for. He should have left immediately. Instead, mortified and strangely reluctant, he stayed for the toasts, and ended up laughing harder at a stranger's best-man speech than he had at anything in months. The bridesmaid, delighted rather than alarmed by his accidental attendance, spent the reception introducing him to people as "the mystery guest," a title that followed him around the room all night. His actual event, three floors up, had ended an hour before he ever noticed his mistake. He never did make it upstairs. He got the bridesmaid's number instead, and two years later, at their own wedding, made sure the seating chart had absolutely no room for confusion.
