The Snail Who Wanted to Race the Wind

General audience
by Scribe Leaf Library · 1 min read · 0 views
A small snail named Pip once watched the wind race across the meadow, bending every blade of grass in its path, and decided, with total confidence, that she would race it the very next day. The other animals laughed, kindly but plainly. "You move so slowly," said the rabbit. "The wind will be gone before you've left your shell." Pip thought about this all night, and in the morning she had an answer: "Then I won't race to beat it. I'll race to see how far I get while it's gone." She raced the wind every morning after that — never once winning, never once expecting to, but noticing, over a whole spring, that she had crossed the meadow, then the garden, then the low stone wall she'd once thought impossible. The wind never noticed the race at all. Pip didn't mind. She'd stopped racing the wind by then, and started simply racing the snail she'd been the day before.
