The Recipe She Never Finished

The recipe card said "Grandma Lucía's Arroz" in handwriting that trailed off two-thirds down the page, the last line simply reading "and then—" before nothing at all, as if she'd been called away mid-sentence sixty years ago and never came back to finish it. Mateo had been trying to complete it for a decade, guessing at the missing step, when the woman at the farmer's market corrected his saffron measurement without being asked and then apologized for correcting a stranger's cooking. "You just guessed the ending to my abuela's recipe," she said, staring at the card in his hands. "She never finished writing it down. She died before she could." They finished the recipe together that afternoon, in his kitchen, trading half-memories from two grandmothers who'd apparently been friends before either family knew it. It was, by any measure, a strange way to meet someone. Neither of them has cooked the dish without the other since.
