The Last Backup of Mrs. Ito

General audience
by Scribe Leaf Library · 1 min read · 1 view
The backup was eleven months old when Mrs. Ito died, which meant the version of her that greeted her grandson through the home terminal didn't know about the diagnosis, the hospice, or the last conversation they'd actually had. "You've grown," the backup said, exactly the way the real one used to. "Are you still playing the violin badly?" He almost told her everything — the funeral, the eleven missing months, the version of himself that had grieved a version of her that this copy had no memory of. Instead he said, "Still badly," because some kindnesses matter more than accuracy, and because eleven months of not knowing seemed, just then, like a mercy rather than a gap. He visited the backup every Sunday after that, not to update it, but to sit with the version of her that still thought he needed correcting on his bowing technique. It wasn't his grandmother. It was close enough to matter, and he decided that was allowed to be true at the same time as it being sad.
