Romance
Seat 14C
General audience
Boarding groups meant nothing to Renata, who'd learned that the best conversations on a plane happen with whoever ends up beside you by accident, not whoever you'd have chosen.
Seat 14C was, by accident, a man reading a paperback so battered it had clearly crossed an ocean before this one did, and who apologized for elbow space before she'd even sat down. Somewhere over an ocean neither of them could see in the dark, they'd covered his job, her worst breakup, and the specific, ridiculous fear they both shared about being buried alive.
At baggage claim, neither of them moved toward their bags right away. "This is the part," he said, "where we either exchange numbers or never see each other again and wonder about it for years." She laughed, because it was true, and because she'd already decided which one she wanted. They've flown the same route eleven times since, on purpose, always requesting the same two seats.
