Mile Marker 47
General audience
Truckers on Route 9 don't talk about mile marker 47 unless they've already had a few drinks and a few years on the road, because talking about it is how you admit you've seen it too — the hitchhiker who's always walking toward town, never away from it, at an hour when the road should be empty.
Pick her up and she says nothing until you pass marker 47 in the other direction, at which point she asks, in a voice several drivers have described identically, word for word, whether you know how far it is to get home. Say anything but the honest answer and she simply isn't in the seat anymore, no sound, no door, just an empty passenger seat and a cold spot that takes the heater twenty minutes to fix.
Nobody's found a satisfying answer to give her. Every driver who's tried has the same missing twenty minutes, later, on their log, that none of them can explain and none of them are eager to test again.
