A Year Without Gravity

The generator failed on a Tuesday, and Halden Colony spent the next year floating instead of walking, which changed more than anyone expected it to. Arguments got shorter, because you couldn't storm out of a room without drifting embarrassingly slow across it. Children got braver, turning corridors into obstacle courses their parents were too dignified to admit they envied. The elderly, freed from joints that had ached on the ground for decades, moved for the first time in years without pain, and several of them cried the first time they realized it. When the engineers finally restored gravity, there was a strange, unspoken grief in the colony, alongside the relief. Chairs became necessary again. Ceilings became unreachable again. Old Dr. Vance, back in his wheelchair after a year of drifting freely through the halls like everyone else, said it best: "We spent a year as the same kind of creature. I'm not sure we'll get that back." Nobody argued with him.
